    蔡元培（1868-1940），字鹤卿，号孑民，浙江绍兴人，清光绪进士，翰林院编修。1904年与陶成章等组织光复会，次年参加同盟会。历任南京临时政府教育总长、北京大学校长、中央研究院院长等职，我国著名教育家。
    此联笔法似学“二王”，结体平正，法度严谨，行笔流畅而瘦劲，写来得心应手，神采自现，不失学者风度。蔡元培先生乃学界泰斗，书法作为其余事，有如此境界，诚属难得。款署“蔡元培”，钤白文印“蔡元培印”、朱文印“鹤庼”二方。下联有“金懋鉴藏金石文字书画印”朱文印一方。（孙小东）

  Cai Yuanpei (1868-1940) was a native of Shaoxing,Zhejiang,a famous educationalist of China.
  The brush strokes of this couplet are applied in accordance with the strict standard.The characters are formed even and straight.the strokes are smooth and unrestrained,and thin but mighty,showing the spirit and energy as well as the scholar’s manner.
