    吴昌硕（1844-1927），原名俊，字昌硕，又字仓石，号缶庐、苦铁，又署破荷、老缶、大聋。70岁后以字行，浙江安吉人。诗、书、画、印皆精，乃“海上画派”之杰出代表人物，篆刻尤为世人所重，为一代宗师，系“西泠印社”首任社长。
    此菊石图轴，以粗犷的线条，淋漓的墨色绘成一块巨石，左下角画秋菊一丛，体现出诗人陶渊明“采菊东篱下，悠然见南山”的意境。画面简洁，气息高古，以石鼓文笔法融入画中，更使画面充盈着金石韵味。左上落款恰到好处，与整体相得益彰。落款“吴昌硕”，钤白文印“俊卿之印”、朱文印“苍石”、白文印“归仁里民”三方。国家二级文物。（孙小东）

  Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) was from Anji,Zhejiang,an outstanding representative of the Haishang Painting School,the first chief of the Xiling Seal Engravers’Society.
  The general appearance of the picture of chrysanthemum and rock is terse,and the spirit high and ancient.The style of inscription on drum-shaped stone blocks of the Qin Dynasty is yntegrated into the picture,making the picture full of lasting appeal of inscriptions on bronzes and stone.
