    赵之谦（1829-1884），字益甫，号撝叔、冷君，悲盦、无闷、梅盦皆其别字，会稽（今浙江绍兴）人。咸丰己未举人，官江西鄱阳、奉新知县。书法初师颜真卿，后专意北碑，自成家数，以北碑笔法写行草，尤为特长。间作花卉，宽博醇厚，水墨交融，为海派画家之重要代表人物。精篆刻，初学邓石如，后借鉴砖、瓦、权、汉金诸文字，所作工整秀逸，气息清醇，为一代篆刻大家。
    此手札为其在江西任上给友人的信札。以北碑笔法出之，信手拈来，自成天趣。用笔老辣而不失灵动，线条丰满，极具张力，金石之气跃然纸上。观其书，给人以美的享受。信札末尾有画家、鉴赏家吴湖帆跋语数行。（孙小东）

Zhao Zhiqian’s Hand Scroll
The Qing Dynasty

  An engraver of no equal of his time,Zhao Zhigian (1829-1884) was a native of Shaoxing,Zhejiang.
  This scroll was Zhao Zhiqian’s personal letter scroll to his friend,when he was an official in Jiangxi.Its technique of calligraphy followed that used on the northern tablet.The writing is experienced and vigorous;the lines are full-bodied,having a great strength.The calligraphic style of bronzes and stone inscriptions stands vividly on the paper.
