    刘宗周（1578?/FONT>1645），字启东，号念台。浙江绍兴人。明万历二十九年（1601）进士，为官清廉，性耿直，明亡后绝食而死。因讲学蕺山，人称“蕺山先生”。有《刘子全书》、《刘子全书补遗》传世。
    绍兴府学建于宋嘉祐年间，此手卷是刘宗周于明崇祯甲申（1644）所作，记录明崇祯癸未九月至甲申二月，绍兴府太守于颖重修绍兴府儒学之寝殿、稽古阁、明伦堂、敬一亭及斋房等，恢复了学宫旧貌之事绩。所作小楷精妙自如，写得沉静雅逸，点画相续处似连非连，体态以拙参巧，耐人寻味；较好地体现了作者的书法功底，在名人书法之中堪称精品。国家一级文物。（刘侃）

Liu Zongzhou’s Handscroll in the Regular Script

  Liu Zongzhou (1578-1645) was from Shaoxing,Zhejiang.The work in the regular script in small characters is exquisite with facility.The linkages between dots and strokes seem to be connected,and yet not connected;the formation looks rude but with ingeniousness included,providing much food for thought.It is good enough to be regarded as an excellent work in the calligraphy of famous persons.
